Content Usage and Sharing Protocol

Please read this important information before sharing content contained on this website.

This website is presented by the Indigenous Research Support Initiative for the purpose of disseminating information free of charge for the benefit of those involved in – or interested in - Indigenous research collaborations.

While we encourage the sharing of information contained on the site for educational and informational purposes, any usage and sharing must be done in a way that respects the rights, governance, and cultural practices of the co-creators and subjects of that content. This is true, in particular, for the images and narrative texts that depict and are co-created by Indigenous people and communities, including their art, objects, stories and ideas.

By reading through the following the guidelines for content sharing, we can collectively ensure that content is used and shared in an appropriate and respectful manner.

If, after reading this page, you still have questions regarding rights and appropriate use, contact us at irsi.info@ubc.ca(link sends email).

Ownership & Permissions

Content on this site is copyright. Much of the content on this site was co-created by IRSI and one or more community partners. That means that the content is co-owned by those jointly responsible for its creation.

In addition, content on the site that depicts Indigenous people, as well as their art, objects, stories and ideas, is considered the intellectual property of those peoples. IRSI does not consider itself the owner of this content.

When imagery or stories are presented on this site about Indigenous community partners, express permissions have been granted to use that content on this site and within specific contexts. The fact that stories, images and other content is shared here does not infer that permissions are granted by the owners of that content to extract and share the stories, images, or other content outside the context of this site.

Wholeness & Context

When sharing site content, it should remain whole and include its original context.

  • The simplest way to share content while maintaining its integrity is by providing a direct link to a page within this website.
  • Another way would be to download a document and share the entire document.

Editing or extracting portions of the content is not appropriate as it may lose important contextual information.

If you would like to share a portion of a story on this website or reproduce it in another format or venue, please contact us at irsi.info@ubc.ca(link sends email).

Citing & Attributions

We ask that you cite the source of content you share or circulate from this site. This ensures that contextual information is maintained in the process of sharing.

  • When sending or posting a link: “Please enjoy this blog post on the website of the Indigenous Research Support Initiative: [link]”
  • When circulating a downloaded document: “Here is a report I downloaded from this page on the Indigenous Research Support Initiative website: irsi.ubc.ca/[specific page]”
  • To avoid plagiarism when sharing content, the original author / creator of that content must always be cited

When sharing a story about an Indigenous community, organization or individual, it is respectful to identify them by name, e.g.: “This is a story about the Heiltsuk Nation’s tiny homes project,” or “This video on the IRSI Youtube channel shows Chief Richard Sidney speaking about…”.

Non-commercial

Use of the material contained on this site is for non-commercial purposes only. Users may download and share content for personal use and within their organizations but may not profit from it by selling it.

Third party content

The permission to reproduce copyright protected material does not extend to any material on this site which is created or co-created by a third party. Authorisation to reproduce such material must be obtained from the copyright holders concerned.
